From GOMC: "Gulfwatch is a chemical-contaminants monitoring program organized and administered by the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment. Since 1993, Gulfwatch has measured contaminants in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) to assess the types and concentration of contaminants in coastal waters of the Gulf of Maine. It is one of the few monitoring programs and the only one in the Gulf of Maine to be coordinated across international borders. " |

National Status and Trends (NOAA) |
From NOAA: " Mussel Watch represents the longest running continuous contaminant monitoring program in U.S. coastal and Great Lakes waters. The project was developed to analyze chemical and biological contaminant trends in sediments and bivalve tissues collected at over 300 coastal sites from 1986 to present. Parameters monitored include sediment and bivalve tissue chemistry for over 100 organic and inorganic contaminants; bivalve histology; and Clostridium perfringens (pathogen) concentrations. This project regularly quantifies PAHs, PCBs, DDTs and its metabolites, TBT and its metabolites, chlorinated pesticides and toxic trace elements. " |

The dataset delineates emergent tidal wetlands within the coastal zone of NH, including the Atlantic coastline from the Massachusetts to the Maine border, the NH side of the Pisquataqua River, Great Bay and its tributaries up to the head of tide, and the NH Isles of Shoals. In general the cover types are based on the US Fish and Wildlife’s wetland classification system developed by Cowardin et al. in 1979. The purpose of the project was to map all emergent tidal wetlands, with an emphasis on the invasive Phragmites (Phragmites australis) and purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria). Cattail (Typha angustifolia and occasionally T. latifolia) were delineated in large stands." |

Cape Cod Tidal Restrictions Atlas |
From Cape Cod Commission: "This study was undertaken to identify salt marsh systems impaired by the restrictionof tidal flow along the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The scope of this project waslimited to sites where salt marshes have been impacted by transportation related facilitiessuch as roads, railroads, causeways, and footpaths. Additionally, infrastructure built tosupport the extensive cranberry farming operations on the Cape was also considered inthis atlas. In some cases, dikes serving no transportation purpose were identified and includedif they were found to be restricting tidal flow to a salt marsh." |

South Shore Tidal Restriction Atlas |
This dataset shows the tidal restrictions from the "Atlas of Tidal Restrictions on the South Shore of Massachusetts," prepared by the Metropolitan Area Planning Council and funded and prepared at the request of the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs Massachusetts Wetlands Restoration Program. The Atlas was published in December 2001 and it "identifies, inventories and prioritizes Massachusetts South Shore tidal restrictions that may adversely impact upstream tidal wetlands" according to the Purpose and Goals section of the Atlas. The municipalities included in the Atlas are Weymouth, Hingham, Hull, Cohasset, Scituate, Norwell, Marshfield, Duxbury, Kingston, and Plymouth. |

From ME DMR: "In the period 1992-1997, eelgrass bed locations were compiled on stable-base manuscripts containing the coastline and other basemap features from the 1:24000 scale USGS topographic maps. Polygons delineating stands of eelgrass were digitized and coded using a four category scale of percent cover. In the 2001 to 2005 time period polygons were screen digitized. Verification has been carried out by boat, on foot, and by plane." |
